Hiroshima is situated in the heart of the Chugoku region on the western side of Japan's main island. It boasts many traditional architectural wonders, lush parks, and long stretches of awe-inspiring natural beauty. It is an ideal day - trip destination for those traveling from Osaka, Kobe, and Okayama.

This blog post has two sections: Hiroshima City and Miyajima Island. I will share some of the best places to see plum blossoms to explore over two days in early spring.

DAY 1 - HIROSHIMA CITY

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

Access:

It is easily accessible via the Shinkansen from major cities in Japan, including Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and Fukuoka.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Hiroshima Candeo Hotel

When I'm on a trip, I always take time to pamper myself after a long day. Candeo Hotels is a 4-star hotel that features world-class Simmons beds, a healthy breakfast buffet, and my favorite, an open-air bath. It is also conveniently located near the city's main attractions, such as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, Shukkei-en Garden, Hiroshima Castle, and Hiroshima Hondori Shopping Street.

My room was very comfortable and had great lighting. It was also the corner room, so could see the city from my window. After checking-in, I decided to relax for a bit and feel the tranquil moment at their open-air bath. They also have buffet for breakfast, which offers healthy dishes to kick start your day.

What to eat: Discover Hiroshima's Delicacies

Oysters and Okonomiyaki

Compared to the traditional okonomiyaki, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is made with yakisoba noodles, eggs, various toppings, and delicious sauces. Additionally, the prefecture is a significant producer of oysters, accounting for almost 60% of Japan's total oyster production. So how about trying the Hiroshima Okonomiyaki topped with oysters?

I stumbled upon this local Okonomiyaki shop near my hotel. It may seem a little mysterious, but often, these places serve good okonomiyaki and are not sold to tourists, unlike in the stations. It was a typical izakaya that serves mainly Hiroshima's soul food.

Shukkei-en

Shukkei-en Garden showcases over 100 plum trees in their plum groove. They have various kinds of plum blossoms in different colours that you can adore.I enjoyed walking around and breathing in the sweet scent of the flowers.

You can also spot other flowers such as Kawazuzakura and mimosa!

Access:

less than 10 min on foot from Hiroshima Station

Hiroshima Castle - Ninomaru Guardhouse Ruins

Another spot to see these sweet beautiful blossoms is in the grounds of Hiroshima castle. As soon as you enter the main gate, you'll be greeted by the sight of pink trees in the Ninomaru Guardhouse Ruins. You can capture the flowers complementing the Taikoyagura Turret from the right angle.

Since you're already in the castle grounds, I recommend exploring the castle grounds, especially if it's your first time. Hiroshima Castle, which is also known as the Carp Castle, is a great example of a "valley castle" built on a plain in the center of a city, as opposed to "mountain castle". Unlike other castles, it has all the features that one would expect in a medieval fortress: a large moat, massive stone walls, bridges, and baileys.

Gokoku Shrine

Hiroshima City Gokoku Shrine

On your way to the castle, passby one of the most significant shrine in Hiroshima. Gokoku Shrine is one of the largest and most popular shrines in Hiroshima. This shrine was built to pay respects to those who lost their lives in wars, particularly the Boshin War. The Boshin War marked the end of the shogunate system and the return of power to the Imperial Government.

Hiroshima Castle

Although I had visited the castle grounds before, I was very excited to finally see the inside of it - we didn't make it till the closing hours on my first visit. The first castle was constructed in the 1590s, however, it was destroyed by the atomic bomb. A replica of the original Hiroshima castle was reconstructed in 1958 and now operates as a museum showcasing Hiroshima's history before the outbreak of World War II. From the top floor, you can enjoy the peaceful city view and the sunset. Also, don't forget to get a gojoin or 'castle stamp' before leaving!

Access:

Station - Godochosha-mae (¥220)

DAY 2 - MIYAJIMA ISLAND

Hiroshima is renowned for the 'floating torii gate', at Miyajima island. This island is also referred to as the 'deer island' due to the abundance of friendly deer that greet visitors upon arrival. While the island is a popular destination year-round, its cherry blossoms are especially captivating during the spring season. However, if you visit earlier, you can still enjoy the essence of spring with the beautiful plum blossoms.

Access:

By train and ferry

option 1: (JR Sanyo Line) Hiroshima Station → Miyajimaguchi Station (25min) ¥420

*Covered by the Japan Rail Pass

option 2: Tram line number 2 from central Hiroshima bound → Miyajimaguchi.

*Not covered by Japan Rail Pass

From Miyajimaguchi Station

Just a few minutes away from the station, you can reach the port where two ferry companies operate - JR and Matsudai. Both companies provide ferry rides that take 10 minutes and cost 200 yen per way. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, I recommend taking the JR ferries to maximize your pass.

By direct boat

From Hiroshima Peace Park - 45min (¥2200 one way/¥4000 roundtrip)

Explore

Daiganji Temple

Behind the Itsukushima Shrine, the grounds of Daiganji temple boasts magnificently blooming plum blossoms. Upon seeing the temple's gate, you'll notice a pink tree in full bloom that compliments the vibes in the shrine.

Things to do

Rent a Kimono

I've been to Miyajima before, so this time I wanted to try something new and decided to wear a Kimono. If you didn't get the chance to wear one in Kyoto or Asakusa, you could give it a try in Miyajima.

What to eat: Hiroshima's famous Momiji Manju

Your trip to Hiroshima wouldn't be complete without trying their Momiji manju. It is a specialty and souvenir unique to Itsukushima. Today, it is popular not only in Miyajima but also throughout Hiroshima Prefecture. This delicacy was invented by a Wagashi craftsman during the late Meiji period. But, how about trying it with a twist?

Miyajima Island is a must-visit destination with a plethora of activities to enjoy. To make the most of your trip, I strongly recommend booking a night to fully explore the island and enjoy the serene beach at night. Don't miss out on visiting the aquariums, taking the rope way to the top of Mt. Misen, and witnessing the spectacular sunset. Make sure to allocate at least a day to Miyajima Island, and you won't regret it.
